Cruelty Free is one of those terms that you hear when people are describing the attributes of most beauty and skin care products. But, what does it really mean?
The term cruelty free can imply that the product does not include animal products in it’s ingredients as well as that animals have not been included in the product testing process. This implication is regardless of where the testing took place and for us that the ingredients and the final product was not tested on animals.
Unlike the term “Organic,” Cruelty Free product certifications are not regulated by the government or a central international organization. Currently, there are three primary non-profit organizations that certify products as Cruelty-Free.
Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics (CCIC)
Established in 1996 as a result of the use of the term “cruelty-free” being associated with various products and brands. Consisting of 27 organizations, the Coalition developed a comprehensive standard and the recognized Leaping Bunny logo.
Choose Cruelty Free (CCF)
Based in Australia, CCF encourages brands and manufacturers to adopt a cruelty-free ethic. It surveys companies that claim to produce products that have not been tested on animals and do not contain cruelty-derived ingredients.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)
Founded in 1980, PETA defends the rights of all animals. It’s Cruelty-Free program, Beauty without Bunnies, requires companies to certify that they do not conduct or commission any animal tests on ingredients, formulations or finished products.
Keep in mind, that just because a product does not have the official certification from the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics, Choose Cruelty Free or Peta does not mean it is not Cruelty-Free. They may have made the conscious decision not to have it solely as a result of the certification cost itself. This would be typical for most start-up brands.
